Charleston Friends Meeting
Meeting For Business
August 8, 2010
Meeting for business opened with a moment of silence.
We approved the July minutes.
We received the treasurer’s report. We are in line with the annual budget.
The meeting decided to add the two other property trustees, Ray Lewis and Charles Schade, as signatories to the checking account. [ Scribe’s note: Consider doing the same for the savings/ CD at next meeting for business].
The meeting approved a minute prepared by Charles Schade regarding the Southern Appalachian Yearly Meeting budget, which is attached and will be forwarded to SAYMA with a copy of these minutes.
The meeting adopted a minute drafted by Steve Mininger, reporting to other West Virginia meetings on the highlights of our recent discussion of memorial societies. That minute is attached. The draft agenda for the Fall Gathering includes a discussion on memorial societies.
Peace and Social Justice : Ray and Conni Lewis attended a presentation held at Taylor Books in Charleston made by the Marshall University Chapter of Engineers Without Borders. That organization is evaluating the feasibility of constructing a small dam to create a dry season reservoir to serve two villages in Zimbabwe. Ray will stay involved and keep us posted.
Bonnie McKeown reported on her attendance at the Baltimore Yearly Meeting, held in Frostburg, Md. Bonnie attended workshops on racism, wounded healers, and Jesus. The meeting had a special meeting room for visitors from other meetings, which proved useful. Bonnie also noted the involvement of many young people. Summer camps for Quaker youth seem to have done a good job in allowing young Quakers to meet each other and share, resulting in their active involvement and leadership. Bonnie expressed her deep appreciation for the help she received which allowed her to attend.
Correspondence: We reviewed several letters and materials received, including appeals for donations. We received the American Friends Service Committee’s announcement that Chan Cretin has been appointed as its new executive director. Friends Journal sent a thank you note for our recent donation, and said it may publish our accompanying letter.
Meeting for Business closed with a moment of silence.
